If you’ve ever worked on the startup of a brick & mortar, or any start-up business really, you very quickly learn the importance of your “tribe.” This was the inspiration for my story on three new shops that opened recently in Pittsburgh. Since startup life is non-stop, the premise was these shop owners were going to “Close for the Holidays” and simply sit back and enjoy the stores they had worked so hard to create (with the help of their support systems).
Each shop featured a different style of holiday party readers could use as inspiration for their own holiday festivities. This story was my baby, from pitch, to writing to styling, so I was thrilled an element of the visuals graced the cover of TABLE Magazine’s Winter Issue!
I handpicked the featured shops based on newness, quality and the overall humble demeanors of the owners. First up: An Indulgent Brunch at The Farmer’s Daughter.

It’s no coincidence that “Work” is Lauren Work Phillips’ maiden name. She has a tireless energy for filling the world with locally grown blooms and beautiful home accents. On Mother’s Day of this year, she expanded her existing florist services and opened her retail location. The name is an ode to her father, a sixth-generation farmer, whose land hosts the fields of flowers Lauren tends, harvests and crafts into beautiful bouquets for weddings, events and brightening days.
Her advice to other Pittsburghers considering opening a shop is this: “Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you, and be an inspiration and support to whomever you can.” Lauren’s own support system is never far. On any given visit to her shop, a customer is likely to see several of her friends assembling bouquets, styling the shop or showcasing their latest handmade collections. This holiday season, she surrounded herself with these friends, including her husband, Paul Phillips, who she says “put as much work into my shop as I did. We are in this together, and I owe the beauty of the shop to him.”
To celebrate those you love this holiday season, consider hosting your own indulgent brunch. Focus your kitchen efforts and appetite on a show-stopping cake or pastry display. The fruit serves the dual purpose of decorating the table and balancing the more filling sweet treats. Keep the champagne flowing, but go beyond a traditional mimosa with a blood orange tea accented by fresh herbs. Lastly, treat yourself to a beautiful bouquet or two from The Farmer’s Daughter herself, and your brunch is sure to inspire!
To highlight Lauren’s love of flowers and her North Side location, my brunch cocktail featured florals suspended in ice cubes, blood orange tea from neighboring shop Arnold’s Tea and some bubbly for high spirits. The casual coffee table brunch service featured bright, wintry fruits for the plucking, fresh greens and vintage floral china.
